What is Bedroom Pop?
You've probably heard the term "bedroom pop" floating around in the world of music and asked yourself, "But what is it?" If you've never heard of bedroom pop until recently then don't worry - you're not alone.
Almost a year ago now, I was first introduced to bedroom pop. While I had a relative idea of what it meant I was curious to find out more about it, so I set out to do some research. From my research I discovered that bedroom pop is a relatively new genre a music that came about as music production became more easily accessible to the masses. Thanks to compact computers, digital audio workstations (DAWs), amps, audio interfaces, and more, musicians no longer needed to seek out producers and sign with a record labels in order to produce music. Streaming services such as YouTube and Soundcloud also provided musicians with easier access to audiences around the world, thus launching them into almost instantaneous fame.
While musicians were now free to produce any genre and variety of music that they pleased on a low budget, bedroom pop has emerged as one of the newest genres of music, and is currently taking the industry by storm. With a DIY vibe, bedroom pop songs are best described as dreamy or fuzzy, and they typically have a lot of reverb and audio looping. While it's unclear as to why this genre has grown faster than others, it isn't hard to understand why consumers are obsessing over these simple melodic tunes. Artists such as Rex Orange County, Gus Dapperton, and Clairo are just a few among many up and coming bedroom pop stars that we'll likely be hearing a lot more from in the near future.
